{Monday Motivation} Desiderata

Last week, while we were stuck in traffic, Don and I were talking about how thankful we are that our parents raised us the way they did.  We want to live a simple and meaningful life and we would like to be a blessing to others.  More importantly, we want Julia to grow up kind, humble and happy.

In this day and age, we recognize that parenting should be intentional.  We parent our kids the best way we know how.  But, as much as I would like to put Julia safely in a bubble wrap and guard her 24/7, I truly believe that growing up should be a combination of dependence and independence.  As parents, there are things that we need to teach our children, but we must not fail to recognize that there are things that they need to learn on their own.  I know this is easier said than done.

Don interrupted my thoughts by asking me to Google "Desiderata."  He said it's his favorite poem.  He said he wants to share it with Julia when she is old enough to understand.  I have known Don for more than 12 years and we have been married for 8, but it was only that night that I found out that his guiding principles are all in this beautiful poem:
