Gabay Guro + The Biggest Celebration Ever for Teachers

I always thought that being a teacher is easy.  In fact, I would like to be one someday.  I am warm, caring, and enthusiastic.  I know how to listen and I can speak in front of a crowd.  Training and Development is my favorite function in Human Resources and I get good scores in my training evaluations.  How hard can it be?  I can be a teacher.

Of course, it did not take me long to realize that I was wrong and arrogant.  Teaching is not just a job; it is a vocation that requires life time commitment.   It is not enough that you have teaching skills; you must have the PASSION to teach.  It is not enough that you know basic classroom management; you need create a safe learning environment for your students.  It is not enough that you have prepared an effective lesson plan or curriculum; you need a heart that can nurture and love unconditionally.  It is not enough that you follow a fair grading system or assessment; you must unfold a meaningful learning experience that will inspire the students to be a better individual and have a better life.

The fulfillment and pride they feel whenever they see their former students is immeasurable.  Being a teacher, especially in the Philippines can be challenging, especially in public schools.  Resources are limited and pay is not high.  Despite this, they continue to strive in order to positively change the lives of those they teach.

I have great respect for teachers.  This is the reason why I support Gabay Guro.  Gabay Guro or 2G is an education arm and flagship project of the PLDT-SMART Foundation.  Programs of Gabay Guro is guided by the Pillars of Learning:

  • Providing better housing and educational facilities to teachers and students;

  • Providing training programs to teachers to enhance their skills;
  • Improving teaching and learning experience of teachers and students by providing better equipment and facilities such as computers and high-speed broadband connection;
  • Providing livelihood programs and;
  • Giving tribute to teachers.
Indeed Gabay Guro is all about "changing the lives of those who changed ours".  Tomorrow,  October 26, PLDT-SMART is throwing the biggest tribute ever for our beloved teachers as it celebrates Teachers Month at the MOA Arena.
